4 Days - “Myanmar΄s South” A must for everyone!

Temples, rocks, pagodas – all plated in gold … and the glory of days gone by.

Do you want to know what influenced, a hundred years ago, the great writers of Britain's colonial splendors, Kipling, Maugham, Orwell, what they marveled at, what they admired, how they wove the fabric of their great novels, then you must come south with us to Moulmein, Martaban, Amherst, to the Golden Rock – pearls which have not lost their shine. Also part of the south is Thaton, the cradle of Buddhism. Named Suvanabumi, Land of Gold, by one of its great kings, this empire fell to the first Burmese king and his army of elephants. Buddhism survived to this day.

1st Day: YANGON – BAGO – KYAIKHTIYO

Early start! We leave Yangon for Bago – once part of the Mon empire! The biggest Reclining Buddha, the highest Golden Pagoda bear witness to a glorious past. On our way south we pass through teak and rubber plantations to reach the Golden Rock. In the light of the afternoon: After an hour’s climb we reach the top and enjoy the magnificent views. This gold plated boulder perched on a crest- held only by one of Buddha's hairs from tumbling down … Magic of Faith! Accommodation: 1 night

2nd Day: KYAIKHTIYO – THATON – MAWLAMYINE / MOULMEIN

Suvanabumi – Land of Gold, is waiting for us: Drive to Thaton where you will see the traces of early Buddhism. On to Martaban where we take the ancient ferry to cross the Salween to arrive at Mawlamyine/ Moulmein to be in the midst of British Colonial times: In 1827, Moulmein was declared as the first British Colonial Capital on Burmese soil. There is much to remind us of that era. Accommodation: 2 nights

3rd Day: MOULMEIN – EXCURSION

Another full day of sightseeing: See Monks shaving their heads though they live in a monastery on Shampoo Island, and the Reclining Buddha near Mudon reported 160 m high – if the sculpture is ever completed. Visit the pagodas and the cemetery of Amherst with almost 4000 graves – casualties of World War II, contrasts of yesterday.

4th Day: MWALAMYINE – HPAAN – YANGON

A long day's drive back. The stroll across the picturesque market of Hpaan, crossing the Salween on the new bridge and tropics pure nature, nature, nature … till you reach Yangon in the evening.
