7 Days - “The wide, wide West” To the territory of Mrauk Oo

The Arakan jungle mountains and the golden beaches of Ngapali

If your next destination is the fascinating Arakan (Rakhine today), you are not anymore among the first to touch down here. But it is not that long ago that Arakanese looked at the few foreigners reaching them as people from outer space. We know what we are talking of: We were the very first. The Arakan today: Still a rewarding target for travel buffs who appreciate a cool drink under the hot sun at bright yellow beaches having previously savored temples in mythical darkness.

1st Day: YANGON – SITTWE – MRAUK OO

Morning flight (1 hour) over the jungle mountains to Sittwe, the “capital” of Arakan, near Bay of Bengal. On a simple river boat – the waters of the mighty Kaladan connect Sittwe with Mrauk Oo – where 500 years ago mighty kings reigned in great splendor. Accommodation: 3 nights

2nd and 3rd Day: MRAUK OO

Two days of total immersion in the past – you walk through dark temple corridors under stone squares weighing tons, you pass galleries full of Buddha figures and mythical creatures surfacing out of the mystic darkness … And you will have to admit, that there are few more beautiful and more fascinating sites to meet ancient Southeast Asian culture. Unforgettable!

4th Day: MRAUK Oo – SITTWE – THANDWE – NGAPALI

Back by the same route with the same simple river boat. Another few hours on the Kaladan enjoying the grandiose expanse of this fluvial landscape. Dolphins might cross your way, white pagodas stand above forgotten hamlets. Short visit of Sittwe and in the afternoon short flight to Thandwe on the Gulf of Bengal. After another short drive you reach your dream beach. Accommodation: 3 nights.

5th and 6th Day: NGAPALI

Dolce-far-niente at the beach of Ngapali where South sea dreams come true: Bright yellow beaches, coconut palms bent by the wind towards the sea, fishing villages “as they are supposed to be”. And the sea – a quiet world of blue. Take good note: This “quiet world of blue” becomes a raging inferno during monsoon months (May through October) – rains, tailfins and giant waves – no, thank you! Many hotels close during this season. But at other times: Swimming, beach combing, watching the sun setting in the sea like a golden orange, a sea which at night under a silver moon glistens seductively. If you want to be more active: Interesting excursions beckon.

7th Day: NGAPALI – THANDWE – YANGON

Enjoy your morning to the fullest – we leave in the early afternoon, Good bye Paradise! Transfer to Thandwe mini airport and again flight above the jungle mountains back to Yangon. If this programmed is at the end of your Myanmar trip, you can book your homeward flight for the same evening.

This programme is ideal for combination with a round-trip along the Classical Route, preferably at the end! Enjoy your last days in Myanmar at the beautiful beaches of Ngapali, living your dreams. Mrauk Oo offers good hotel accommodation, so do the beaches of Ngapali.

The ideal mixture of cultural fascination and dolce far niente at tropical beaches.
The boat trips on the Kaladan take 5 to 6 hours; only basic comfort is offered, please do not expect any luxuries. Recommended period for traveling: Only during dry-monsoon-season, i.e. November through April.
