Myanmar Weather

Climate and Weather

Myanmar is usually classified as having a tropical monsoon climate and has three seasons – although roughly half the country lies outside the tropical zone. Its climate is similar to India's –

Raining season is from mid May till mid October with an average temperature of 25-30 C, bringing rain from the Bay of Bengal. Summer is from mid February to mid May with an average temperature of 30-35 C. Temperature can reach 45 C in central Myanmar. Dry and cold season (moderate season) is from mid October till mid February with average temperature of 20-24 C. This is the best time for traveling, although the mountainous regions and the Shan plateau can be chilly and temperature of 5–10 C at this time.

Myanmar can be visited all year round regardless of the seasons. Although during the raining season, it rains in Yangon and Inle Lake, still traveling to Myanmar is still enjoyable because Mandalay and Bagan lies in dry zones where it barely rains.

Clothing

Cool, comfortable cotton is the most suitable fabric for Myanmar’s warm, humid climate. Locally-made cotton is available at most destinations. Light clothing is required all year-round, but a sweater or jacket may be needed when traveling in northern Myanmar or other hilly areas, especially during cool season. If visiting during the rainy season (May - September), an umbrella or raincoat will be required for the days in Inle lake and Yangon.
Upon entering Buddhist religious monuments, socks and shoes have to be removed hence comfortable sandals are very much the order of the day.

Credit Cards and Traveler Cheques information

Credit Cards

Any kinds for credit cards and Traveler Cheques are currently not accepted in Myanmar. Some international hotels might accept payment with credit card with a high surcharge. So, it is advisable that the travelers should bring enough money in USD cash. Euro and other currencies are difficult to use in Myanmar.

Health Information

Health

Protective vaccination is generally not required for travel to Myanmar (Burma) unless you enter the country from a region with an infected area. It is, however, recommended to have malaria prophylaxis especially when traveling to remote areas in conjunction with other measures to prevent mosquito bites. The sun lotion and hat are advisable to bring with you. It is best to bring your own small first-aid kit including medication. It is sometimes difficult to find even common Western drugs. Some of the big hotels avail medical assistance. Please contact us if you would like detailed information on emergency health services available. Myanmar still has a large population of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, leopards, wild buffalos, the endangered Sumatran rhinoceros, wild boar, monkeys, flying squirrels, porcupines, civet cats, red and black deer, black bears and the Malayan sun bear. There are also 52 varieties of poisonous snake - Myanmar has the highest death rate from snakebites in the world. The most highly infested areas are the Dry Zone (snakes live in many of Pagans ruined temples) and the Irrawaddy delta. The deadliest snakes are Russel's viper and the Asiatic king cobra.

Travel Insurance

An adequate travel insurance policy to cover medical and accident is highly recommended. It is advisable to purchase travel insurance in your own country.
